In this game, Jiang Chuan used horse opening, Wang Xiaohua replied with pawn opening. Jiang Chuan followed by central cannon, obviously he want to win this game. Black made a mistake in the midgame and loses his horse. After losing the horse, Black no other option, but to deploy all his main pieces to battle for the last fight. Red defensed his territory steadily and did not give any chance for Black.Finally Red wins.

In this game, GM Jiang Chuan had demonstrated how to play a good game as Black. All players should learn these tactics.

Zhou Jun developed his opening as 56 Cannons Single Horse Defend, whereas Jiang Chuan used Sandwiched Horses Opening.  Obviously, Zhou Jun's opening strategy was initiated massive attack during opening. This is common for Red player. Whereas, Jiang Chuan's strategy was defenses and wait for opportunity. This is common as Black player.

Red first move C2=4 or C8=6 is known as Palcorner Opening variation. Palcorner Cannon Opening focuses on midgame and setup endgame. Normally Black will respond with opposite direction cannon. The reason is simply because Red is not possible to transform to Screen Horses Defense, since it palcorner cannon is placed within his proper horses. Therefore, in most cases, Red will transform to Sandwiched Horses Defense to against Black's opposite direction cannon.

Palcorner Cannon Opening is not popular as other opening, however, we still can see some Grand Masters may use this opening during tournament.

IGM has prepared well for this opening. He did his home-work and applied new variation.

Red began with Central Cannon opening, Black responded with Screen Horses Defense. Both reached 57 Cannons 3rd Pawn Formation vs Screen Horse Defense variation.

In this new variation, IGM Jiang deployed his right horse rapidly to the battle. By doing this, IGM Jiang has gained Black's center pawn during the opening.

Later in the midgame, IGM Jiang moved his center pawn and capture Black's elephant. Lastly, IGM Jiang by using tactic shifting - to move both of his cannons to attack Black's elephant.

Finally checkmated with double cannons checkmate!

Great Xiangqi Grand Master Hu Runghua, has gained good results by using Elephant Opening. Since then, elephant opening variation has became a popular opening for Shanghai Team. Shanghai's players often use elephant opening in main tournaments and have obtained good results.
Before this game, GM Sun also often used elephant opening against me, he either won or draw.

Grand Master Jiang Chuan

Jiang Chuan was born on 26th January 1984, in Wenzhou, China. He starts to learn Xiangqi at year 1990. In year 2002, he gained China National Xiangqi Master title. In 26th October 2010, he won China National Championship tournament and gained China National Xiangqi Grand Master title. In 25th November 2011, he won 12th World Xiangqi Championship tournament and gained Xiangqi International Grand Master title.
